Born ‘Steven Alan Grossman’, Steven Alan is an American fashion designer who is the founder of the chain of boutiques under his name and the Steven Alan Collection which consists of a menswear and women’s wear line inspired by traditional heritage. His designs have been featured in all the famous fashion publications like Teen Vogue, Nylon, British Vogue and New York Magazine, Los Angeles Times and New York Times. Fashion magazine, Women’s Wear Daily once quoted that Steven Alan has become a household name in the fashion industry attracting hip customers like Natalie Portman and twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Steven Alan opened his first showroom and retail store in New York in 1994 bringing the collections of all emerging designers under one roof. After the successful launch of his multi-designer retail store, Alan moved onto creating his own line of ready to wear clothing which included colorful plaid, striped and chambray dresses along with chinos, signature reverse seam button- downs. The New York Times wrote that the collection was fit for those searching for edgier versions of traditional garb. Steven Alan became a bicoastal brand in 2008 growing exponentially beyond its six eponymous locations in New York to the introduction of three new stores in Southern California in 2008. The fourth west coast store and San Francisco’s first boutique opened in Hayes Valley.

Designer Steven Alan has also been part of much collaboration throughout his successful career. He has designed collections for Japanese line Uniqlo and Urban Outfitters. Alan also designed shoes in partnership with Keds and quite recently, he came up with a collection of sportswear and khakis for Dockers. According to the his official website, the designer has reached a global audience with his collection being sold at over 300 outlets the world over. The Steven Alan Showroom is currently housing twenty designers of handbags, clothing and fashion accessories. Fashion Authority, Women’s Wear Daily reported on April 29, 2011 that a percentage of the business’ share was sold to the founder of Fossil Inc., Tom Kartsotis. A group of investors along with Kartsotis have been taking over American fashion brands under the name of Bedrock Manufacturing Corporation.

Steven in conjunction with Superga came up with a footwear collection for summer 2013. The collection varied greatly from his previous collaboration with Keds; incorporating bright colors for the sunny months of summer. His fall capsule collection of 2013 was produced in association with Canadian brand, Wings + Horns, made with a material of double faced gauze wool in a signature color palette of combinations blue with grey and olive with black. The limited edition collection was made available at all Steven Alan stores on July 23, 2013. Steven Alan joined forces with famous footwear brand CLAE and designed a capsule collection fit for outdoors as well as the concrete jungle. The subtle footwear collection was designed keeping the men of today in mind with pricing around $180.

Known for his subversive take on classics, Steven Alan came up with an exclusive handcrafted home collection for West Elm in 2014. The collection included everything from bedding to rugs, vases and furniture for all types of rooms. In January 2014, West Elm announced the launch of another exclusive collection by him called Steve Alan Stripes which was sold on West Elm’s online store.
